Last Flight

This morning, I rented a Cessna 172 from one of the FBOs at Livermore Airport and flew my final flight as a pilot. It was a beautiful send-off, with touch-and-go landings at Stockton and Tracy Airports. I logged 1.2 hours on this flight.

After more than 60 years in the air, this marks my last flight as Pilot-in-Command (PIC). I’m hanging it up as a pilot; I have no regrets. I've checked all the boxes, including:

  • Lifelong friendships and acquaintanceships with other pilots and customers
  • Nine owned aircraft...and a whole lot of fun!
  • More than 6,600 hours as PIC (including over 2,600 hours instructing others)
  • FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate, single- and multi-engine land
  • FAA Flight Instructor certificate with single-engine, multi-engine, and instrument ratings
  • FAA Commercial Pilot privileges for single-engine sea and gliders
  • Recipient of the FAA Wright Brothers "Master Pilot" Award
  • Over 700 Young Eagles flights
  • Flights across the United States, border to border and coast to coast
  • ...and through it all, I have no accidents and I have no violations on my record

All good things must come to an end. I’m grateful to be retiring from being a pilot and a flight instructor on my own terms. I may have had a few more years left in me, but I’d rather step away now than wishing I had done it eariler.

Aviation has always been a part of my life. In many ways, it has been my life.
