The photo above was taken on Saturday, August 8, 2009, at Reid-Hillview Airport in San Jose, California. It was taken by professional photographer Pat Lewis. (More of Pat's work is at patlewis.smugmug.com.) The boy in the picture with me is Keith Kingston, age 17, son of Kevin and Gail Kingston of San Jose. Right after the picture was taken, I took Keith, Kevin, and Gail on a 20-minute aerial tour of the South Bay including San Jose, Morgan Hill, Anderson Reservoir, and Mount Hamilton/Lick Observatory. This flight was one of seven I made that day in conjunction with "Take Flight For Kids" sponsored by Valley Medical Center Foundation, Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 62, and many, many others. Take Flight For Kids is a group of volunteers who take kids with disabilities, special needs, and critical illnesses flying in private aircraft. Their goal is to show the kids that the sky is literally the limit to reaching out and overriding their perceived limitations.
How big an event was Take Flight For Kids? Estimates are that there were 3,000 visitors who wandered through 200 exhibits in the Reid-Hillview Airport parking lot. Over 2,400 free lunches were served. There were 44 volunteer pilots who made 150 flights with 600 passengers including young people with special needs along with their family and friends. The number of volunteers for the entire event is estimated at 300.
